MOBULA RAY EXPEDITION

Baja Sur

Join us on this 5 day Mobula Ray Expedition! Every year, tens of thousands of Mobula Rays come to visit Baja California from April to July. The largest schools in the World can be found here in Baja, and it’s one of nature’s most spectacular events. Mobulas are famous for their high jumps and acrobatics in the air. Freediving with hundreds or thousands of them is a unique experience that you can’t miss.

Mobula Rays are the star in this expedition, however this tour is a marine safari meaning we will search for a variety of species. Usually we swim with mobulas in the early morning when they are more active and then move to another spot to search for other wildlife. Turtles, dolphins and sea lions are seen frequently in this expedition. There is also a chance to see more rare species. The more time your spend on the water the better your odds.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What experience do I need?

You need to be able to know how to swim and snorkel. Feel confortable swimming in open ocean without seeing bottom. There is no need for scuba diving certification or freediving certification.

What is the activity level?

It varies according to the school of mobulas. Sometimes they swim very slow and we barely have to move. Other times they go faster and we need to swim a little faster. However if you ever get tired your guide will help you. At any time you want you can call the captain to come pick you up to rest on the boat. Many people actually like to stay on the boat to take topside pictures of mobula ray acrobatics! Exertion level: moderate to medium.

Should I take a freediving course prior to the expedition?

It is not necessary. However if you’d like to be better prepared, it can be arranged. Please contact us to schedule a course.

What is the mobula sighting success?

We try our best to schedule expeditions in the best season to maximize our encounters with mobulas and other wildlife. We have an extremely high sighting success of mobulas, however we don’t guarantee any encounters.
