What’s the difference between the AIDA 1 (Discover Freediving) and the AIDA 2 (Beginner) course?

The AIDA 1 and AIDA 2 courses are both part of the AIDA (International Association for the Development of Apnea) freediving education system, but they cater to different levels of experience and goals. Here’s a breakdown of the key differences:

AIDA 1: Discover Freediving

  • Level: Beginner
  • Duration: 1 day
  • Focus: Introduction to the basics of freediving in a safe and relaxed environment.
  • What You’ll Learn:
    • Basic breathing techniques for freediving.
    • Safety protocols and how to dive with a buddy.
    • Equalization methods (beginner level).
    • Basic theory about freediving physiology and physics.
    • Simple relaxation techniques for the water.
  • Depth Goal: No specific depth requirement—focus is on comfort and safety in the water.
  • Certification: Upon completion, you’ll have a basic understanding of freediving and be ready to explore the sport further.

Ideal For: Absolute beginners or those curious about freediving who want a short, no-pressure introduction to the sport. Also ideal for travelers who want to try the sport but don’t have enough time for a 4 day course.

AIDA 2: Beginner Freediver Course

  • Level: Beginner
  • Duration: 4 days
  • Focus: Building foundational skills and achieving deeper dives with proper technique.
  • What You’ll Learn:
    • Advanced breathing techniques and breath-hold exercises.
    • Improved equalization methods (e.g., Frenzel technique).
    • Dive planning and safety procedures for deeper dives.
    • More in-depth theory on freediving physiology, physics, and risks.
    • Refined finning and body positioning techniques.
  • Depth Goal:  12-20 meters (40-66 feet) with comfort and safety in the water.
  • Certification: Demonstrates competency in freediving fundamentals and prepares you for deeper exploration.

Ideal For: Those who feel very comfortable in the water (for example like to snorkel or swim or scuba). Those who have completed AIDA 1 (although is not a requirement to take the AIDA 1 first). Those who have some freediving experience and want to progress to deeper dives with better technique and confidence.
